OptinMonster makes it easy to create a fully customized campaign form to capture lead details from your site visitors.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add extra fields to your OptinMonster campaign form.

We provide several options for adding extra fields to your OptinMonster campaign, depending on the Email Service Provider you use. These options are outlined below.

Field Mapping

Field Mapping is a brand -new feature available for our most popular Email Service Provider integrations. You can easily add radio buttons, phone fields, text, areas, number fields, lists, and more!

Embed Form Block

Our Embed Form block allows you to add any form embed code directly to your OptinMonster campaign. This includes forms from platforms we don’t have direct integration with.

When using the Embed Form block, you will:

  1. Create the form using your Email Service Provider’s form builder.
  2. Add an Embed Form block to your OptinMonster campaign where you want the custom form to visually appear.
  3. Paste the form’s embed code into the Form Embed block.
*Custom HubSpot forms must be edited following this guide to function correctly.
*Custom Marketo forms must be edited following this guide to function correctly.
  4. Update the form’s embed code to track conversions, following this guide.
  5. Optional: Add custom CSS to control the styling of your form. Custom embedded forms do not automatically inherit the campaign’s template styling.

Javascript-based forms are supported, however, a Javascript error in your form code may break your OptinMonster campaign. If that happens please be sure to reach out to support for assistance.

iFrame forms are supported, however, it is not possible to capture conversions, set cookies on submission (to control how long a campaign is hidden), or customize the appearance of the form with custom CSS. Whenever possible, we recommend using an alternative form embed option (HTML or Javascript) if one is provided.

WordPress Shortcodes

You can show a form in your OptinMonster campaign that you’ve created using a WordPress plugin.

WordPress WPForms Block

You can easily create a WPForms custom form and embed it in OptinMonster using our WPForms block.

OptinMonster makes it easy to add a video to any campaign with no coding required.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add a video to an OptinMonster campaign.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

  • The video you add to your campaign must already be hosted on another site. You cannot upload video files directly to your OptinMonster media library.
  • The video you embed must be publicly accessible. If the video is set to private on sites like YouTube, Vimeo, etc it will not load.

Add Video

Some campaign templates already include a video block, but one (or more) videos can be added to any template, anywhere you like.

To add a video block to a campaign, follow these steps:

  1. From the Design view of the campaign builder drag and drop an Video block into your campaign design where you would like it to appear.
Add a video block to the campaign.
  2. Next, locate and copy the embed url for your video. This may be different than what you see in your address bar.
  3. Returning to the campaign builder, paste the embed URL into the Hosted Video URL field.
Add your video embed url to the field provided in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  4. (Optional) You can now configure any design settings for your video block in the sidebar panel.
  5. When you are finished, click Save.

FAQs

Can I save a video block once I customize it to re-use it later on?

Yes! Learn how to create and use saved blocks.

How do I hide the controls, autoplay or loop my video?

If your video hosting service supports it, this can be done by adding the appropriate query string to the end of your video embed URL.

The following resources may help you get started:

Important:

Please be aware that a visitor’s individual browser settings may block autoplay regardless of the settings you configure.

Common Query Parameters

Query Parameters each have a Key and a Value. Therefore they always appear as something like: ?key=value

When it comes to the query parameters used for these video parameters, the number 1 is used to represent “true” or “enabled” whereas the number 0 is used to represent “false” or “disabled”.

You can add the follow query parameters to the end of your video link to achieve additional functionality with your video.

YouTube

  • Autoplay a Video → ?autoplay=1
  • Hide Video Information → ?showinfo=0
  • Hide Video Player Controls → ?controls=0

Examples of a YouTube Video URL to be used in OptinMonster:

  1. www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID/?autoplay=1
  2. www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?autoplay=1&showinfo=0&controls=0

Important

In Chrome browser, autoplay works only if the video is muted by default. For example: www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID/?autoplay=1&mute=1

Vimeo

  • Autoplay a Video* → ?autoplay=1&muted=1
  • Loop the Video → ?loop=1
  • Set Default Video Quality → ?quality=1080p

*It’s necessary to have the video muted before autoplay can work with Vimeo-hosted videos, regardless of browser.

Examples of a Vimeo Video URL to be used in OptinMonster:

  1. //player.vimeo.com/video/VIDEO_ID?autoplay=1&muted=1
  2. //player.vimeo.com/video/VIDEO_ID?autoplay=1&muted=1&loop=1&quality=1080p

Wistia

  • Start at 30 seconds → ?time=30
  • “Slide” Transition between videos → ?transition=slide

Examples of a Vimeo Video URL to be used in OptinMonster:

  1. //fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/VIDEO_ID?time=30
  2. //fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/VIDEO_ID?transition=slide

Troubleshooting

My video isn’t loading in the campaign preview, why?

The most common reason is using an incorrect video embed URL. Most video-hosting services will use a specific URL for video embedding which is different from the URL displayed in your browser.

The following formats for video embed URLs should be used (replacing VIDEO_ID with the ID of your video) when embedding video from these common video-hosting services:

YouTube — //www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID

Vimeo — //player.vimeo.com/video/VIDEO_ID

Wistia — //fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/VIDEO_ID

Another reason the video may not appear is if it is set to private and cannot be embedded on external sites by the video hosting platform. Only public videos can be embedded.

If you own the rights to the video you may be able to change the privacy settings directly from the video hosting platform.

OptinMonster makes it easy to add a link to your Success Message after a visitor subscribes through your campaign. Redirect to another page or a PDF file with the click of a button.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add a link to the Success Message of a campaign.

Add Redirect Link

Adding a link to your Success View provides clear instructions for what your new subscriber should do next. It also helps you accomplish more in one campaign: collect new leads, and immediately deliver more value after a visitor signs up.

To add a link to your Success View, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Design view of the campaign builder, switch to the Success View to edit the design.
Switch to the Success View in the campaign builder to customize the design.
  2. Next, drag a Button block from the sidebar into the campaign where you would like it to appear.
Add button to the Success View of your campaign.
  3. While the button is selected, edit the Button Click Action setting in the sidebar panel.
Select Redirect to a URL from the dropdown and enter your URL into the Redirect URL field.
Configure the Success View button to redirect to a URL.
  4. When you are finished, Save the campaign.

FAQs

Can I configure my redirect button to directly download my lead magnet?

The easiest way to do this is if you are using Dropbox to store and share your file, you can add ?dl=1 to the end of your document’s URL to trigger a direct download.

Your full lead magnet download link will look something like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/a1b2c3d4ef5gh6/example.docx?dl=1

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

Add Shortcode

You can use shortcodes in your OptinMonster campaign to further customize the appearance, content, and functionality.

To add a shortcode to your OptinMonster campaign, follow these steps:

In this walk-through we’re adding a WPForms shortcode to an OptinMonster campaign.

  1. Copy your shortcode from its source.
  2. Then, go to your OptinMonster campaign in the OptinMonster builder.
  3. Select the Add Blocks button then click and drag an HTML element into your campaign.
  4. Paste the shortcode you previously copied into the HTML editor box.

Note:

The Campaign Builder will not show you a live preview of the parsed shortcode. Don’t worry! It will still appear correctly on your site.

  1. Once you are satisfied with your campaign’s appearance and settings, set the campaign Status to Live and then Save your campaign.
  2. Next, navigate to the Campaigns list in the OptinMonster plugin, from the admin of your WordPress site.
  3. Your campaigns and their Publish statuses will automatically sync to the OptinMonster plugin. Confirm or update your campaign’s status as needed.
  4. The campaign should now appear on your site for you to test.

With OptinMonster you can pass lead data to the redirect URL by enabling a single option in the campaign builder. Passing lead data to the redirect URL allows you to use that data for further customization on that page.

In this article, you’ll learn how to enable the option to pass lead data to the redirect URL in OptinMonster.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

  • Lead data is passed to the redirect URL as query arguments.
  • The email address is passed to the query arg as om_email.
  • The name is passed to the query arg as om_name (if the name field is enabled).
  • The phone is passed to the query arg as om_phone (if the phone field is enabled).
  • The query arguments used (as shown above) cannot be customized at this time.

Pass Lead Data to Redirect URL

When you’re looking to further customize and personalize your success / thank you page you can use lead data to do so.

To pass lead data to the redirect URL, follow these steps:

  1. From the Design view of the campaign builder, directly select the submit button of the optin form to edit the settings.
  2. Next, locate the Button Click Action setting in the sidebar panel and select Redirect to a URL or Open in new Window from the dropdown field.
  3. You can now toggle the Pass parameters to redirect URL? option.
Enable the pass parameters to redirect url option.
  4. When you’re finished, click Save.

FAQs

Can you provide an example of how the lead data is passed in the redirect URL?

Yes, an example of the formatting is:

https://optinmonster.com/?om_email=name@email.com&om_name=John+Smith&om_phone=5555555555
Can I customize the query args?

No, the default query args (om_email, om_phone , and om_name) cannot be modified.

Can I capture the query args from the page and pass that to the redirect URL?

Yes, it is possible to capture the query args, like UTM Parameters, from the page your visitor is submitting the campaign on and pass it to the URL you are redirecting them to as per the below steps:

  1. The first step for any campaign you wish to add this functionality to, is to add the following code to the Custom Javascript field in the campaign builder:
Custom Javascript OptinMonsterThis will register a custom smart tag {{query_args}}, that will output all query args from the current page.
document.addEventListener('om.Campaign.load', function(event) {
const queryString = window.location.search; // capture all query args
// Registers a custom `query_args` smart tag that outputs all query args from the current page.
        event.detail.Campaign.Dtr.setCustomVariable('query_args', queryString);
        });
  1. Then, set the Success Action of your form or button to Redirect to a URL, and add this smart tag to the end of the URL: {{query_args}}

For example:https://optinmonster.com/{{query_args}}Add Query Parameter to Redirect URL
Save the Campaign and it will capture the query args from the page the campaign is displayed on and pass them on to the URL you are redirecting the users to.

How can I learn more about using lead data in the redirect URL?

Are you using OptinMonster to collect leads and deliver downloadable files such as an eBook, PDF guide, etc.?

This article teaches you how to deliver downloadable files to your new subscribers.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

  • A downloadable file, in this guide, indicates a PDF file.
  • We recommend uploading the file you want to deliver to a remote server or file-hosting platform, like Dropbox.
  • It is not possible to upload files to your OptinMonster account to provide to subscribers.
  • It is not possible to send emails directly from OptinMonster to your subscribers. For that, you’ll want to use a dedicated Email Service Provider.

Deliver Downloadable Files by Email

One of the best ways to deliver downloadable files is to send them directly to your new subscribers in an email sent from your Email Service Provider (ESP). You can provide the file in your first email to new subscribers, or make it part of a campaign sequence if your ESP allows you to create sequences.

The benefit of this approach is that only legitimate subscribers receive the file.

With this approach, you’ll work within your ESP to create an email that sends to new subscribers and attach the downloadable file to that email.

The exact process to do this will vary depending on your ESP; if you need assistance getting started, don’t hesitate to contact our support team.

Add a Download Button

To add a button to your campaign the links to the hosted PDF file for download, follow these steps:

  1. Upload your PDF file to your own site or a file-sharing platform like Dropbox (explained below).
  2. In the campaign builder, add a button block following our guide here.
  3. When configuring the button click action (aka Success Action) for your button, add the URL to your hosted PDF file in the “redirect to URL” option’s field.

Redirect on Submission

To automatically redirect the visitor to your hosted PDF file for download, configure the Success Action of the optin form to “redirect to URL” and enter the PDF file share URL in the provided field.

Learn more about configuring the Success Action in this guide.

Dropbox File Hosting

You can store your downloadable file on Dropbox and add the shareable link to your campaign.

To do this, upload the downloadable file to Dropbox and generate a share link following their guide.

Dropbox also allows you to set a shareable link to automatically download the file to the visitor’s computer by editing the query argument in the share URL from ?dl=0 to ?dl=1. Like this:

Original share URL: https://www.dropbox.com/s/17a2za7bdw97k3/hello.pdf?dl=0
Updated share URL: https://www.dropbox.com/s/17a2za7bdw97k3/hello.pdf?dl=1

Once you have your hosted file share link, you can use it in the Success Action of a campaign. As described in the steps above, you can:

  • Add share URL to a button in the campaign
  • Redirect the visitor to the share URL after they submit the optin form

FAQs

Where can I host my PDF file?

You can upload the PDF file to your own website or use a file hosting platform like Dropbox.

Will Content Locking negatively affect my website’s SEO?

From the indexability point of view, a Content Locker campaign is 100% SEO friendly because search engines always see the content. We can visually hide the entire page or post from visitors, however, the search engine will still index it and know what the content is.

That said, Search Engines focus on UXO now i.e. User Experience Optimization.

If you put a content locker after the first paragraph, you’d most definitely lose rankings because your bounce rate will be higher.

However, if you add a Content Locker, for example, halfway through the post, it is unlikely to impact SEO at all.

We can compare this scenario to be the same thing as a zero-second popup vs an Exit-Intent popup. The former might lead to a higher bounce rate than the latter (thus resulting in a negative SEO impact).

For that reason, we recommend you monitor the bounce rate of pages and posts where you are using Content Locking and make any necessary adjustments on placement to optimize your results.

Can I unlock all content on my site after a visitor has subscribed?

Yes! Be sure to set global cookie durations for your domain. Any value greater than zero for the Global Success Cookie will unlock all content on your site once a visitor has subscribed for that number of days.

Can I use Content Locking with a Custom HTML Integration?

Yes, just be sure you’ve configured your custom form or actionable HTML element to track conversions following our guide here.

Troubleshooting

I’ve embedded my campaign but the content is not being locked.

Be sure that the content you wish to lock is within the same <div> container as the campaign’s embed code.

In particular, some WordPress page builders like Visual Composer, Divi Builder, etc, separate content into their own <div> containers when adding elements. If you are using a page builder like this you’ll need to manually add the campaign embed code and content you wish to have locked to the same container using an HTML block or similar element.

Why doesn’t Blur work on Internet Explorer 11?

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 11 does not support the blur method, so to ensure your content isn’t freely available to visitors on IE11 we remove the content from view until it has been unlocked.

Troubleshooting

How do I resize my image? My image is “zoomed in”, or too small for my Fullscreen Background.

Use the additional background image options that appear once you’ve set the image to control the sizing.

  • Background Position: This setting allows you to position your image within the frame of your screen.
  • Background Repeat: This setting allows you to repeat your background image if it is smaller than the total amount of background space. It also allows you to choose the direction your image repeats in (if set to repeat).
  • Background Size: This setting allows you to adjust the size or how “zoomed in” your background image is. There are 3 options available:
    • Cover: This option will resize your image to fully “cover” the size of your Fullscreen Background area. This may stretch your image, depending on its original size.
    •  Contain: This option will resize your image so that its longest dimension (width or height) will match 100% of the Fullscreen Background, fully “containing” your image. This may leave empty space, depending on your image’s dimensions. You can pair this setting with one of the Background Repeat options to fill that space.
    • Auto: This option will display your image at its original size. Depending on your original dimensions, this may display your image too large for your Fullscreen  (looking “zoomed in”) or too small. If the image is too small, and blurry when resized larger, try uploading a larger version of your image, or using the “Background Repeat” options to “tile” your image across your background.
